At 4:07am, during a severe lightning storm, facility
power was overvoltaged, then single-phased, followed
by lack of utility power. Several pieces of
equipment were blown apart. Servers initiated
an orderly shutdown in response to the smoke and
voltage problems. Equipment was repaired, and
servers were brought back online on generator power.
All services were restored by 5:10am. Utility
power was restored by 6pm, and generator bypass was

- At approximately 9:16am, a fiber circuit went down.
The circuit transitioned its traffic to other circuits,
but unfortunately some outbound email remained stuck in
a queue. The queue was manually cleared around
2:30pm and all remaining outbound email was processed
within the hour. Incoming email was not affected nor
delayed, all outbound email was processed, but some were
delayed. On Thursday, April 25th at approximately
9:52pm repairs to the circuit were finished and the
circuit came back up. Traffic transitioned back
with no further problems. During this outage,

- This morning at 7:53am, a fiber circuit went down.
Access to email was unstable until the backup line was
enabled. At approximately 10am all access to email
was fully restored. Unfortunately, the outage
caused outgoing email to back up in a mail queue causing
mail delivery delays. By 8pm, all email in the
queue was delivered.
- The fiber service was finally restored on December
28th at 6:52pm. Total fiber outage lasted for 34
hours and 59 minutes.
- While the fiber circuit was down for over a day,
email services were fully operational within 2 hours and
all delayed email was delivered by 8pm.
- Service will remain on backups until it has been
determined that the fiber circuit is stable enough to be
trusted.

Changes have been made to deprecate the use of all
SSL protocols to access all servers. These
changes will take effect over the following week.
Several ciphers and hashes are being removed and
reordered in accordance with safe practices.
TLS will of course be supported (until problems are
found in those protocols).
-
Due to the above changes, older browsers may no
longer function when connection is attempted.
In particular, Internet Explorer 6 will no longer be
able to access our secure websites. Internet
Explorer 8 can be made to work, but TLS needs to be
manually activated. It is suggested that all
clients upgrade to the latest version of their
browser (Internet Explorer, Firefox, Chrome, etc).

This afternoon at 3:54pm a primary network
connection failed. The failure was ultimately
caused by inclement weather; heavy rains caused
flooding in an underground vault coupled with a
lightening strike caused widespread outages.
Equipment as well as actual distributions lines were
damaged as a result of the flooding and lighting
strike. Verizon was unable to restore full
service until Monday morning, March 3rd, at 10:45am.
During this outage our backup lines took over email
functions. A few users were unable to access
their email via their Smartphone or iPad during this
period, however Webmail, POP, and SMTP remained
online throughout the outage. No email was
lost or delayed. This outage lasted 1 day,
18 hours, and 51 minutes.

emails were not scanned for spam. Unfortunately this was
unavoidable. The new anti-spam engine is now installed and working
properly and has been updated to include phishing detection as well. More
information on some of the new features will be forthcoming. Anti-virus

At exactly 1:00pm today, a large OC12 Verizon circuit went down. This affected
about 1/2 of the cities phone and digital customers, including our primary and
failover data lines. While our backup lines were still operational,
the outage affected the ability of most users to pick up their email, and
access web sites. Incoming email automatically routed to the backup line
so no incoming or outgoing email was affected. At 3:27pm, Verizon

Due to a high volume of a variety of new viruses, an unusually large amount of
virus updates needed to be performed, necessitating a system restart.
Normally these restarts can be done after hours, but due to the large amount of

hours. Mail retrieval was interrupted at 3:25pm for approximately 15
minutes. A spam filter upgrade failed during the restart and spam
filtering was not operational until repairs were made during normal maintenance

At approximately 3:05am today, a Verizon circuit went down. This circuit
failure caused many Verizon customers in this region to be without phone
or digital service for several hours. Service was intermittent throughout
the morning hours as Verizon crews worked to repair the circuits. The
circuit failure caused intermittent web site access and email access. The
circuits were officially fully operational at 5:30pm, although full service was
actually restored several hours prior. Incoming email was not affected,
nor was fax service.

During normally scheduled maintenance this morning, a problem was (finally)
detected on one of the routers. At 3:04am today, the router was removed
from service. Being that the problem was found early on a weekend, the
decision was made to repair the router instead of replacing it. During
the day services were interrupted briefly while the router was repaired,
initialized, and brought back into service. Full functionality was
restored by 2:59pm Saturday. The problem that was finally detected was
the initial cause of the problem dated 3/26/06.

At 8:22am today, a router failed to re-initialize itself during self
test. This caused outages on several services. Full functionally
was restored to all services at 12:27pm. Incoming and outgoing email was
not affected. At approximately 1:35pm the router was restarted again
resulting in an additional 8 minute downtime on selected services. The
initial cause is still being investigated. This failure is not related to
the equipment upgrade performed last week.
-
Update (5/27/06): The initial caused was finally determined after exhaustive
weekly diagnostics performed during normal scheduled maintenance. The
problem was tracked down to a intermittently failing module. The module
has been replaced.
•Saturday, March 18th 2006
-
A scheduled upgrade was performed between 2:35pm and 3:15pm. Service was
briefly and intermittently interrupted during this upgrade. Although a
vast majority of the upgrade was completed, there is still more to do.
More information will be posted here when it becomes available.
•Friday, March 10th 2006

A scheduled upgrade was attempted between 6:45pm and 8:45pm. Service was
briefly interrupted during this upgrade. Unfortunately the upgrade was
not completed and will be rescheduled for later on this month. The
upgrade will be scheduled after normal business hours, and service will be
briefly interrupted once again while the upgrade is attempted. More
information will be posted here when it becomes available.

As it was almost 2 months ago, no explanation was given today when Verizon
dropped a line from 2:12pm to 4:02pm. The line "mysteriously" came back
once again.
The ability to pickup email was affected. Incoming and outgoing email was
not affected. Some web sites were affected.

No explanation was given today when Verizon dropped a line from 2:18pm to
4:35pm. The line "mysteriously" came back before the trouble ticket was
processed. The ability to pickup email was affected. Incoming and
outgoing email was not affected. We are unable to investigate the cause,
as Verizon has not admitted there was a problem.

A configuration problem at Verizon (due to the move of their equipment on
Tuesday) necessitated the reprogramming of several router affecting the
circuits that we have. This morning, for a couple of minutes at a time
(while they were reprogramming), connection speed was affected. We are
suspecting that short, intermittent, outages, or "slowness", may occur
throughout the morning while they finalize the changes to their equipment.
•Wednesday, October 26th 2005

7:40am - All services are operational and all customers have been moved back
onto the primary email servers.
•Wednesday, October 26th 2005
-
The ability to pickup email was affected for approximately 15 minutes this
morning at 7:35am while we switched customers back on to the main email
server. No email was lost, nor was incoming email affected.

-
Access to most web sites was affected last night between 6:11pm and 6:24am this
morning. The ability to pickup or send email was not affected.
Incoming email was not affected. We are investigating the cause of this
outage but suspect It was caused by Verizon's earlier equipment move.
More information will be posted here when it becomes available. Update:
Verizon admitted that they had incorrect records in their router. As a
result of this error, when an automatic internal audit was performed, the
router was reset to the incorrect settings. The problem was a direct
result of the equipment move (their equipment, not ours) yesterday.
•Tuesday, October 25th 2005

An announced scheduled outage went beyond the announced time of between 6am and
9am today. The ability to pickup email, as well as access most web sites,
was affected. The outage, which was supposed to last no more than 30
minutes, lasted from 6:48am until 10:45am. This outage was caused by
Verizon moving equipment at their site. The equipment that Verizon moved
was not at our site, and we had nothing to do with the equipment, the move, or
the scheduling, unfortunately it affected us none the less. Incoming email as
well as the ability for most customers to send email was not affected.

time. Incoming email was not affected. This problem has been
corrected. We apologize for any inconvenience that this has caused.

Early this afternoon Edison dropped power to over 1180 customers including
us. Our battery backup units properly engaged and supplied power to the
servers and related equipment for most of the afternoon until approximately
4:43pm when, after a backup generator previously failed to engage to pickup the
load, they could no longer supply power to all of the systems. Service to
all major server functions (email, web, sql, dns, etc.) was interrupted until
approximately 6:38pm. Total system outage time was 1 hour and 55
minutes. We apologize for this outage and are taking steps to insure that
our backup generator will properly engage in the future.

Today at approximately 11:30 a huge amount of incoming spam email
(approximately 10GB and tens of thousands of emails) attempted to swamp one of
our mail servers. Rather than have the system slow down to a crawl to
process these malicious emails, the decision was made to shut down the email
server to protect it. This shutdown lasted approximately 12 minutes while
we took steps to block the incoming swarm. No email was lost during this
procedure.

Today at approximately 1:17pm, Verizon decided to "test" one of our digital
circuits. This "test" caused the line to go down for approximately 45
minutes, it came back up for about 20 minutes, then dropped twice more before
3:11pm. After 3:11pm the line has been stable. This interruption of
service caused customers to be unable to look at, or send email. This did
not affect any incoming email, and no email was lost. We apologize for
this interruption of service.

A digital circuit was re-routed today at 12:37pm by Verizon with no advanced
warning. Although Verizon claimed that it would be down for less than 1
minute, it remained down for approximately 24 hours. Services affected by
this line outage were automatically picked up by the backup systems. This
change over of services caused a delay in sending some email. No delays
in receiving or picking up email occurred, no email was lost.
The line outage also affected the ability of VPN customers to connect, the VPN
services were re-routed within approximately 3 hours of the line re-route.

This past weekend saw the release of a new worm across the internet. In
order to combat the spread of this internet worm, internet providers across the
country started to block specific port numbers that this worm uses.
Unfortunately, the blockage of these ports has caused problems for many of our
customers. Some internet providers have re-opened these ports, others
have not, some will never re-open these ports. We are working on a
"work-around solution" to this problem. The problem is not related to any
service that Sorkin Computer is providing. Sorkin Computer is not
blocking any ports, nor has any service been discontinued or changed.

Update: The outages that occurred on May 12th, April 30th, and April 26th
were all related to the same failure. Although Verizon had assured us
that the problem was fixed at the end of April, it obviously was not.
Verizon has been working hard to track the problem down and resolve the problem
once and for all. In the next few days, as part of the process to finally
resolve this issue, Verizon will be turning off network equipment between 45
minutes and 2 hours at approximately 3am. This disruption will cause a failure
to connect to one or more of the services during this time. The equipment
will be brought back online before 5am regardless. Thank you for your
understanding in this matter.
